ADHD in Australian Children

Doctor-Hugging-Child

What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity that affect a child’s functioning at home, at school, or socially. It’s a lifelong condition for many, though its impact can change significantly with the right support and structure.

The Impact on Families

An ADHD diagnosis affects the whole household, not just the child. Parents often navigate additional demands around routines, school communication, and advocating for their child’s needs. Siblings can be affected too, and family stress levels are often higher when a child’s needs aren’t yet well understood or supported. Many families find that connecting with the right mix of educational and allied support makes a meaningful difference to daily life.

Does This Sound Like Your Child?

  • Trouble waiting in queues or transitioning between activities
  • Difficulty sitting still or staying seated for extended periods
  • Struggles to follow multi-step instructions without reminders
  • Frequent tantrums or difficulty managing frustration in the moment
  • Loses focus quickly on non-preferred tasks like homework or chores
  • Overwhelmed in busy environments like shopping centres or parties
  • Interrupts often or acts before thinking through consequences
  • Resists or struggles with a consistent bedtime routine
  • Frequently loses or forgets belongings for school
  • Struggles to settle down in structured settings like the classroom

When a child’s nervous system is functioning well, we may see their whole body respond to external stress differently. For kids navigating neurological or neurodivergent differences, this capacity for adaptability to stress can be especially meaningful, as their systems may often be working harder to process and respond to the stressful environment.

As all health practitioners will say, we’re not claiming to change a specific diagnosis.

What we can say is that supporting the body’s growth and development may affect the foundation for what a human body is designed to do—especially in children: adapt, regulate and function.
